GROOMING:
While the harsh double coat of these little guys is considered 'WASH & WEAR'   Don't believe it!!
Well, I guess it's about as close as you can get UNLESS you are maintaining a 'show coat'; that requires lots of time & patience.  Let me explain to you the difference......

NOTE: to keep the coat healthy and maintain the proper texture
Both Pet & Show  coats need to be HAND STRIPPED.

A Pet Coat:  This would be as close to the 'Wash & Wear' as you can get.
**  Comb thouroughly once a week with a fine tooth comb to remove any dead / loose undercoat.
This also helps the natural oils to spread throughout the coat
**  Trim nails once a month minium - this can be done with the standard nail clippers or with a rotorary                      tool, like a Dremiel.  This is my prederence as the dogs seem to tolerate it better and the
chances of breaking the quick is very slim. I prefer the sanding bands rather than the stones,
as they don't heat up as much.
**  Trim  (with sissors - this is the only use for them) around the foot; between the pads and under the
                    tail and around the anus.
**  Hand Strip at least twice a year:  I personaly (as a groomer) like to see the breeds striped more like 3
times a year; usually in early spring - it's cooler for the dog in the summer and aides in pest
control (fleas & ticks), late summer and again in early winter.

Breed Standards:
More than just the ear carriage seperates the Norwich and Norfolk Terrier, it is though  by far the most obvious one.  Some of the other more subtle differences are: the coat growth and texture; the length and shape of the body; and most definetly the temperment.

I find discribing the coat differences to be very difficult, I guess it's just something you  have to see and feel, it's more than just color difference and the texture variations that that produces.  As for the body - the Norwich is slightly shorter of back, which makes the silhoutte more square and as for temperment......
Let's just say I could go on for sometime with those, but to limit words, I will stick to the most obvious ones: the Norfolk is more cleaver and a sly creature, that'snot to say the Norwich is not smart or sly, just that the Norfolk is more refined at it. (That's one reason why I think a Norfolk is a better 'ratter' than a Norwich - IMHO).  A Norfolk is a more of  an 'independant contractor', that is to say they want to know at all times what and where you are, but not on you; a Norwich on the other hand wants to be on you and is more dependant on you.  As my husband so nicely put it "A Norfolk knows they own you and that you WILL take care of them; while a Norwich knows you own them and will do anything to please you and wants to be on you."
Breed STANDARDS:  Norfolk - Norwich
A BRIEF HISTORY:
Most terriers derive from English origins, as far back as the Norman Conquest there seems to have been some sort of terrier about.   Kept for vermin control, the breeding strieved for a compact animal that was fearless, a good pack worker and sterdy in nature with a harsh protective coat.

The Norwich Terrier dates back to the late 1800's and the breedings of Charles "Doggy" Lawrence and his Cantab Terriers, some 20 years or so later he was followed by E. J. Hopkins breeding that produced his Trumpington Terriers. To refine this breed even more, in the early 1900's a man named Frank Jones
bought with him from Ireland his 2 small red dogs to Norfolk, England, where he worked with the hunters & hounds. He bred these small red terriers to gain a good size for going to ground and bolting vermin or fox and to work well in packs.   Frank played a great part not only in deriving the
Norwich Terrier we know today, but also in naming of the breed.

By 1932 The Kennel Club (England) recognised these little dogs as Norwich Terriers; and divided them by ear carriage; drop-eared and prick-eared.  Then in 1962 this English kennel club decided to divide them in to two seperate breeds - the Norwich (prick-eared) and the Norfolk (drop-eared) Terriers.  It took another 15 years for the United States and the American Kennel Club to follow suite.
